Overview

The Berkeley Policy Institute (BPI, formerly BRG Institute) was founded in 2015 by the consulting firm BRG as an independent nonprofit corporation to advance knowledge on the global economy, the corporation, technological innovation, financial institutions, and elements of law and policy through research, open publication, and public engagement.

Leadership

David Teece

David Teece, BPI Executive Director, is Distinguished Scholar of Strategy and Innovation at the University of South Florida Muma College of Business, Executive Chairman and a cofounder of BRG, Professor of the Graduate School at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, and a former member of the board of overseers for the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a renowned economist and an authority on matters of industrial organization, technological change, and innovation, particularly as it relates to antitrust and competition policy and intellectual property. He received the 2021 Clarivate Citation Laureate in economics for his work in entrepreneurship, innovation, and competition. Dr. Teece resides in Florida.

Bowman Heiden

Bowman Heiden leads the Eira Initiative and the Program on Technology Leadership and U.S. Competitiveness. He is executive director of the Tusher Strategic Initiative for Technology Leadership at UC Berkeley and director of the Center for Intellectual Property (CIP) at the University of Gothenburg, which is a joint platform between academia and industry focused on the transformation of knowledge into wealth and welfare. He is also the co-chair of the Technology, Innovation, and Intellectual Property program at the Classical Liberal Institute at the NYU School of Law. Dr. Heiden was recently a member of the European Commission Expert Group on Standard Essential Patents.

Kieran Brown

Kieran Brown works across innovation, industrial, and economic research topics. He has served clients globally in automotive, manufacturing, technology and financial sectors. Mr. Brown previously was a fellow in the public sector practice at McKinsey & Company. He is a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley Haas School of Business and has been a visiting lecturer at GIBS Business School, University of Pretoria.
